Once a year, in partnership with the Creative Diversity Network (CDN) our ITV News teams across the UK host Open Newsroom Days. The day allows students, who want to see what it’s really like to work in news, to find out what it takes to deliver the news nationwide, from presenting the weather and being a camera operator to working with our finance, technology, legal and site teams, budding youngsters get a rare peek behind the scenes.
November 2016 has been the third time that our ITV News teams have hosted the event along with other broadcasters including Channel 4, CNN, Sky News and the BBC. Around 500 young people attended across the UK and set social media alight with tweets and photos.
The events are set up by our newsrooms diversity champions coordinating regular meetings with representatives of diverse communities in their region and Sangeeta Bhabra, Presenter, ITV Meridian, took overall responsibility for the event this year.
Over the last three years we have had 50 young people come through our doors at ITV Meridian – many have no link to the industry. I take part in Open Newsrooms because diversity matters to me – seeing young people from different backgrounds realise that this industry could be theirs too makes Open Newsrooms worth all the effort
